Just as the Rus seafarers honored Stribog, god of the winds, so too did they revere the Sea King himself. Tsar Vodyanik—also called the Nether-King or Chernomorets—rules the underwater world alongside his queen, Belorybitsa, the White Fish.
He dwells in a submarine palace of crystal and pearl, commands a host of sea warriors, and rides the waves in a golden chariot. In his wrath or his revelry, he raises mountainous swells and sends ships to their watery graves. The Sea King guards many secrets; within his realm, at the very bottom of the Ocean, lies a cavern that descends straight into Peklo, the infernal abyss, from which the Great Black Serpent shall emerge at the End of Days.
There, upon a throne of jet and bone, sits the Serpent of the Black Sea—a monstrous marvel of the deep, the Nether-King, the Sea-Wonder. Fearsome guardians surround him: crabs with claws like scythes, the wily catfish with his bristling whiskers, the thick-lipped burbot—that soul-snatching slobberer—and the sturgeon, the giant beluga, the pike with her dagger-teeth, and the great frog with a belly like a brewing vat. And over all these, reigning supreme, is the White Fish herself, Tsarina Belorybitsa.
Yet the sea holds another kingdom besides the realm of Chernomorets. In its depths dwell men and gods who once ruled the dry land, long ago. They sank to the ocean floor together with the great island that perished in the Flood—the island of Atlantis.
This realm is governed by Volynia, the Mistress of the Sea. She is the consort of the Sun-god Ra. When Ra transformed himself into a river and flowed into the depths, Volynia and her kingdom descended with him to the seabed. From the union of the Mistress of the Sea and the Sun-god Ra came two daughters: Rada, who became the wife of Kryshny, and Plenka, who wed the mighty Svyatogor.
